Lab Makes Presentations at 2011 Geography and GIS Fair
On November 15, students made poster presentations at the Ohio Union for the 2011 Geography and GIS Fair on recent research being conducted at the Mapping & GIS Lab. Presentations on our work for the NASA MER 2003 mission, the NASA Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter mission, and the European Space Agency ExoMars mission as well as work on NASA/NSBRI lunar astronaut navigation and a new Mars panoramic scanning system were presented.

Shaojun He Receives Duane C. Brown 2010 Junior Award
Shaojun, a graduate research associate at the Mapping & GIS Lab and PhD Candidate, has been awarded the 2010 Duane C. Brown Junior Award. The Duane C. Brown Award was established to “promote and stimulate scientific activity in photogrammetry” at The Ohio State University. Annually, awards are made to a senior and a junior person, one  “who has most successfully forwarded the cause of photogrammetry and strengthened the reputation of the Department of Geodetic Science and Surveying in the field of photogrammetry.” The senior award went to Dr. Brent A. Archinal of the U.S. Geological Survey (see his seminar here).

Congratulations to Lin Yan
Congratulations to Lin Yan, who successfully defended his Ph.D. dissertation Region-based Geometric Active Contour for Classification using Hyperspectral Remote Sensing Images. Dr. Yan has accepted a postdoctoral researcher position at South Dakota State University.

New Honor for Dr. Ron Li
Dr. Ron Li has just been elected as as ASCE Fellow. This election from the American Societyof Civil Engineers is a considerable honor. ASCE fellows are practitioners, educators, mentors, and most of all leaders. They have distinguished careers that have contributed significantly to the Civil Engineering profession. The accomplishments of Fellows have left their marks on their communities, society, and future engineering professionals.

New Track in Civil Engineering
The OSU Civil Engineering program has just announced a new MS and PhD track in Geoinformation and Geodetic Engineering that covers one or more areas of research using photogrammetry, image understanding, mapping, geographic information science, satellite geodesy, and remote sensing. Read the announcement here.

Latest Mars Traverse Maps
The latest traverse maps for the Mars rovers: Spirit (as of Sol 2836) and Opportunity (as of Sol 2816). Spirit rover became stuck in the sand on Sol 1894 (May 2009). In January (2010) NASA turned the Spirit rover into a stationary science platform. Full size maps can be viewed by clicking on the appropriate image below. For additional OSU Mars maps, visit the NASA website.
